<image:caption>Who’s Your Daddy? Acrylic, Crayon, Yarn 31” x 35.25” 2020 This piece is the first of my series titled Forever A Child. The series focuses on childhood memories in which I recreate them using art materials and methods that would be appealing to the eye of a child. This drawing is about how when growing up until I was a certain age, I thought every “African American” man was my father due to the dark color of their skin. I was convinced that Levar Burton was my father because they were both black, had an earring on the same ear, and others questioned if he was my father which validated the possibility to be true in my young mind.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I Was a Flat Earther Chair, Desk, Books, Toys 30” x 27” x 29” 2020 This installation is a representation of what my childhood school desk looked like from first grade. The main piece of the memory is the books on the desk. As a young first grader, we were told the world was round but I did not understand this as the globe was presented as a flat oval in a book to us students. I would then ask “How do you get to the other side, and what is on the other side of the earth?” What made this memory even funnier is the fact that my family owned a globe, yet I could not put both concepts together.</image:caption>

My parents took my sister and me to Sea World one day. During the day they had a dancing and hula-hoop competition. My sister won the dancing competition and I won the hula-hoop competition. Accumulations of toys, clothes, and belongings serve as markers of what I held valuable from my childhood and what I still value today. My love for the virtual band the Gorillaz molded the type of music and artwork I enjoy listening to and I thank creators Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn for it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Stop Copying Me & I’m Original Acrylic, Cardboard, Metal Grid (2) 24” x 24” 2019 “Stop Copying Me & I’m Original” is a commentary on peoples social outward appearance. It is also the beginning of my “Negative Self Reflections” series. We are all so worried about not being copied and claiming that we are original or self-made as way to claim our independence and uniqueness though we inherently have those characteristics. I our appearance is a constant self-centered battle where we want to be our own person but contradict ourselves by imitating others.</image:caption>

The mirror is there to force you to reflect and question if this is how you feel about yourself.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Unfocused Cardboard, Metal Grid, Yarn 15” x 15” x 15” 2019 “Unfocused'“ is a term we all have been described as by others in a higher position than you. Whether it was by a mentor or coach it was always puzzling to hear that term especially when you are working really hard and trying any way that you can to obtain your goal. The differences on each side of the cube represent the different ways in which we try, the fact that each side is different in the application method is where I relate the idea of being called unfocused.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Fitting In Cardboard, Meta Grid, Monofilament, Tape 10” x 10” 2019 “Fitting In” is exactly what it sounds like. This piece is about how we all aim to fit in and be normalized in society but then contradict ourselves by wanting to be unique when though we may be part of a group, we already are unique because of our inherent differences. I exemplify this message by fitting cardboard cubicles into the metal grid system and then adding inserts fitting into the cardboard cubicles.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Blindly Following (M.y A.ctions G.et A.bsolved) Acrylic, Cardboard, Charcoal, Cloth, Tape, Yarn Various Sizes 2019 “Blindly Following” is a piece that acts as a ruse. The full title including the acronym and the imagery is meant to fool the viewer into thinking that this artwork is a political piece and that I am intentionally saying something negative about President Donald Trump. When in fact, that is not my intention. Just like in my “A Common King” installation depicting President Donald Trump is not my goal as it could have been any president but I decided to choose whoever was in office. The purpose of this piece is to question who you follow and not to follow anyone just because. I make reference on those who have to or are mandated to follow someone without question in the piece through the military figure behind the President following his “road” or “path.” Then behind the military figure you have other civilians who blindly follow the President or those with power, either because they are scared, are not educated enough to make their own decisions, or various other reasons.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Like Father, Like Son Cardboard, Mirror, Saran Wrap 32” x 12” 2019 “Like Father, Like Son” is a commentary about the viewers’ relationship with their father whether they have one or not. If the viewer has a great relationship with their father and admires them then they will see great things in their reflection. But since this work is part of my “Negative Reflection Series” I am focusing on the negative things one would have seen in their father now within themselves through the reflection of the mirror in the bottom negative headspace. The top negative headspace references the fathers who weren’t there for their children, and if they were there for their children and if you see the saran wrap which references how now as an adult you may recognize how transparent your father may have really been. As a mixed African American male, this piece also takes a jab at the negative idea of those who think just because some fathers were not there for their children does not mean that those children will not be there for their own.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Not Black Enough Acrylic, Cardboard Various 2019 “Not Black Enough” speaks about others and my personal experience about being a mixed-African American who has received back lash for being a lighter complexion compared to darker-skinned African Americans. This piece is a conversation on classes between your own race and culture. “Not Black Enough” also serves as a critique to those who express their interest in “Blacks” for being an exotic as to say they have “had” darker Blacks in reference in color or more “black” in reference to them thinking they know how all Black people act.</image:caption>

Each piece represents an animated part of yourself and the reactions of your possibilities.</image:caption>

This piece has to do with the addiction of being self-conscious of the way the body looks. Looking back at how I got so intrigued into self-care at a young age, I realize I traded a traumatizing experience for an obsession which was working out and have the perfect body. I would soon learn maintaining a perfect body was very taxing and unhealthy in the way I was approaching it. That behavior would later develop into another behavior which was to relax by relying on a substance like alcohol, particularly beer, where at the end of my days I would always feel “I need a beer.”</image:caption>

Even for those who are aware of global issues of Earth’s preservation we, which includes myself, still do not sacrifice to the best of our abilities to preserve the earth for the future. For example, the world is very aware of recycling now yet we still do not reduce production enough.</image:caption>

Cardboard, Tape 22” x 7” x 7.5” 2019 “Too Wide, or Too Small” is the embodiment of women and men being self-conscious and aware of our bodies and sexuality. As a minimal sculpture, I comment on the common issue that so many of us worried about when we were growing up. Many can relate to wondering if their breasts or penis were big enough, if we had an attractive body, or if we had enough sexual experience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The World Grid Cardboard, Metal Grid, Mirror, Yarn 8’ x 20” x 20” 2018 The World Grid is an installation piece that is meant to make the viewer reflect on their role in the world. Reflection and contemplation of your role occur in the piece through the small mirror that is positioned directly in front of the mirror. Inside the grid box, I include a soccer ball that is designed as the globe to represent the world. Soccer is the most accessible sport around the world and cardboard is one of the most accessible materials as well. This installation is also a commentary on mail and how we rely on others for our resources through shipping companies, packaging materials, and individuals. This piece is also inspired by a passion for the recycling and waste epidemic occurring globally.</image:caption>

Through weaving I can create compelling patterns, narratives, and commentary based on color and the packaging material based on text and company. This first panel in particular focuses on the formal and qualitative characteristics of cardboard such as the color and texture to create a calming and repetitive pattern. The cardboard, metal grid, and yarn in this artwork were found materials.</image:caption>

That time is from the 1960s-1990s which was the golden era of graffiti, hip-hop & rap, and b-boying. This installation is an example of how I envisioned that time era was like when I was a child. When I was young I would see the remains of this culture and how it would slowly evolve over the next two decades. Supported by performance, this installation was an attempt to give me a feel of what it was like to be part of the urban culture in its golden era while reminiscing about a time that I never truly experienced.</image:caption>

<image:caption>First Man Wood Carving 18” x 10” 2016 My ongoing series of totem carvings and casts reference all types of gods, deities, beings, and things worshiped around the world. The goal of the series is to show the importance people place on their personal belief systems and to prompt thought into why people hold those beliefs. It is also a commentary on the confusion between worshiping an item versus the spiritual figure that item represents.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Perfect Symetrical Attraction Acrylic, Spray Paint, Oil Marker 5’ x 4’ 2015 Yes, the word “symmetrical” is purposely spelled incorrectly in the title. The second piece in my “Forever Continuously Infinite Series,” this works speaks specifically on my struggles of trying to achieve physical perfection and looking presentable. The facial features and markings are imperfect and not symmetrical though I want to be seen as if they are. This works talks about trying to fit into the stereotype that more symmetrical faces tend to be more attractive..</image:caption>

<image:caption>The New Painting 40” x 30” Acrylic and Charcoal on Canvas 2025 This artwork is an attempt to specifically make a provisional artwork. With Raphael Rubenstein coining the term in the early 2000s, questions come up if provisional work can be successful if done forcefully, or if a successful Provisional painting only occurs when you are not planning to create one. Provisional painting in general begs the question of what is considered an aesthetically successful painting when using abstract methods.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Staring at My Phone Waiting For Something to Change Poem, Digital Image 2020 During the Coronavirus pandemic in the USA, many of us isolate ourselves and others. Mental and emotional health is now a subject that most are affected by even if they did not have issues before. As we hide away in our self-protective shells during this time we question the relationships we had and have. Because I and so many have more time now for personal reflection we go over scenarios in our head whether they are real, hypothetical, or theoretical. Sometimes this is a positive action so that we may heal ourselves within and learn how to conduct ourselves in the future. Other times this is a toxic act because it may not be best to rekindle negative feelings or give life to things again that should be laid to rest.</image:caption>

The mannequin legs’ short felt skirt and genitalia-like-colored pallet board signifies how the sexual image that many see women represent. While the upper torso portion acts as a shelf and holds mini-narratives of sexual victimization through found objects that correlates with references that millennials connect to such as Spongebob Squarepants, cd’s that act as breasts, Pokemon doing crude sexual acts, and more.</image:caption>

The process that helped create this series was to limit myself to a certain palette and make unconscious marks until I came to a point where imagery was becoming recognized and made into fruition. All of the landscapes are suggest multiple dimensions and are heavily influenced by my graffiti and street art background.</image:caption>

I created this artwork so that it may serve as a symbol of rest as employees make their way to the break room away from production grounds. The term "Slip Space" is used as a making a transition from one space to another, as a way a for me to symbolize making a transition from work to rest.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Que Hace Tiempo? Acrylic, Cardboard, Wine Dyed Yarn, Yarn 49”x 58” 2021 This is the first artwork created at my Residency A to Z Wineworks. This artwork is installed into and around a window that my fellow coworkers and I passed each day. Due to how busy we were consistently working, up to 12 hours a day for five to six days a week, I often looked out of the window and questioned what time and day it was, as I watched the landscape outside the window change from season to season. This work incorporates the wine that I helped make at this residency within the materials. This work is inserted into and around a window.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Candy Yum Yums Cardboard, Yarn 48” x 54” 2021 This work begins to show the variation that can occur within my Yarn Bombing series. These works can be considered paintings and installations. Often, the question of “What is a painting?” or “What makes a painting?” is posed in mixed media two-dimensional works that can be hung on a wall. I add to the conversation of those questions by this works design elements being created with all yarn.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wanting To Be Comforted Acrylic, Paper, Yarn 69” x 69.5” x 7” 2021 Continuing with the Yarn Bombing series, these works are based on my research in world-building. World-building has multiple subsets which are the individual, community, and environment. In my Yarn Bombing series, I focus on the individual by acknowledging identity through the illegible monikers I create, just how graffiti monikers operate as an identity. I also focus on the environment for these works as I imagine the forms of these pieces being extractions from my imaginative world that is filled with graffiti and unique sites.</image:caption>

<image:caption>They Say We’re Just Fragmented Cavemen Acrylic, Cardboard, Paper, Yarn 77” x 67” x 7.5” 2020 A continuation of my Yarn Bombings series, this work begins to experiment with different textures and additive materials to speak to the idea of having to work with your environment in a reactive method even if it is not ideal circumstances, like those who create graffiti illegally. In this series, I use color methodically to best compliment the environment I envision each piece to be set in. The monikers created in these works are purposely illegible to make sure the viewer does not add images to the thought of these works other than themselves.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work</image:title>
<image:caption>That 20-30 Zone Acrylic, Charcoal, Glue, Oil Pencil, Paper, Yarn 10” x 11” 2019 The first piece of my yarn bombing series. This work occurred first from a random stroke while trying to clean my paintbrush. What resulted was a form that reminded of markings you would see on the streets such as graffiti. I then added dimension and paint in the form of a graffiti bomb. I then took yarn and wrapped the material around the created moniker which in a way reminded me of the “yarn bombing” movement you would see in public. The play of the titles of the works and the way in which I create them is important. When creating this work I felt the closest to creating graffiti again than I have in a long time. But my yarn bombings are subverted. Usually, graffiti bombs are quick and created with spray paint which is a quick medium, and usually, yarn bombing is done by wrapping or crocheting yarn around an object. In these works, I am creating graffiti bombs with a paintbrush and wrapping yarn around the moniker. Still, I feel as if I am creating graffiti. Also, it takes just as long to make one of these as it would be a graffiti bomb with spray paint on the street.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Work - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Untitled Aluminum Labels, Aluminum Caps, Monofilament 56” x 48” 2022 This work is the culmination of my artwork made at a residency in Oregon at a winery.. This work is about the manual labor it takes to make something beautiful just like in wine. This artwork was very tedious and methodical to make. A lot of the work was hard due to the motor skills needed. I had to cut the aluminum label on both sides so they wouldn't be sharp, I had to bend them into place, then I had to staple them to the next label with just the right amount of overlap which majority of the time would fail to puncture the materials. I did this over and over again. Then I had to puncture holes in some of the labels and caps and tie them with monofilament. It was a lot of work over a long amount of time for a fulfilling outcome.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Flip Side Corks, Dyed Yarn, Metal, Lees, Rope, Wine, Wood 54” x 34” 2022 In Flip Side, the different wood materials are the centerpieces of the artwork for me. Both the wood of the barrel and the corks, as part of the vessel, time stamp, and marker of labor. They all have their individual history about how the wine they are stained with was made. They are a visual of a group of people’s labor. I believe the colors displayed in the corks honor the hard work that was used to put into the wine. In this artwork, I abstract the branding logo on each of the barrel heads and change the organization of the wine types that would be in the barrel. I paint each barrel head with lees respectively with the type of wine that would be in that barrel. Even the metal stands on which the barrel heads lay are differently shaped but are designed to show that they would support the weight of the barrels.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Slip Space Acrylic, Cardboard, Yarn 117” x 25” 2022 Slip Space is integrated into the stairwell to the winery break room where employees get rest from the difficult manual labor. I created this artwork so that it may serve as a symbol of rest as employees make their way to the break room away from production grounds. The term "Slip Space" is used as a making a transition from one space to another, as a way a for me to symbolize making a transition from work to rest.</image:caption>

Acrylic, Cardboard, Yarn, Wine Dyed Yarn 49”x 58” 2021 This is the first artwork created at during my residency, this artwork is installed into and around a window that my fellow coworkers and I passed each day.
